Mahatma Gandhi is perhaps the most widely recognized Indians in the world, which is why you see his statues in several foreign lands. That he was a great man and a great leader is not something we need to tell anyone, but one thing that people might not know about him is that he was also a very farsighted man, which is why several of his quotes hold true in today's time as well, even though it's been several decades since they were spoken.
On the occassion of Gandhi Jayanti tomorrow, here are some of his quotes which can motivate today's generation and give them the much-required mental peace.
1. The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.
2. Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.
3. Be the change that you wish to see in the world.
4. Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.
5. It has always been a mystery to me how men can feel themselves honoured by the humiliation of their fellow beings.
6. An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.
7. The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
8. You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
9. Where there is love there is life.
10. You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
11. Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.
12. Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one's weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
13. Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment, full effort is full victory.
14. Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.
15. The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
16. A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.
17. There is more to life than increasing its speed.
18. I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.
19. There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.
20. I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.
To end it, we leave you with the world-famous Talisman that he gave to the world.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man [woman] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him [her]. Will he [she] gain anything by it? Will it restore him [her] to a control over his [her] own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj [freedom] for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."
